TRAVEL | JODHPUR, THE BLUE CITY

Jodhpur, the blue city and the second biggest in Rajasthan was our final stop. With its cobalt hues, some say the colour is associated closely with the Brahmins, India’s priestly cast with the houses belonging to the caste’s families whilst other believe the houses were painted blue to deter termites.

Whatever the origin, Jodhpur is a mesmerising labyrinthine of winding alleyways and streets dotted with an array of bazaars with the Mehrangarh Fort, the city’s star attraction standing tall over its sea of blue cubes. Its buzzing commotion, typical of Indian cities combined with the melodic call to prayer immediately charms and its beauty certainly feeds the soul.

RAAS, a design hotel located inside the city walls was our base. Arriving at night, you’re greeted to an incredible view of the towering fort illuminated and being bang in the middle of Jodhpur, you’re surrounded by the city’s bustling ambience.

Its impressive architectural creation exudes sophistication with the modern pink sandstone additions in keeping with the 18th century traditional haveli and its flashes of blue decor, nods to the city’s namesake, including a very stylish tuk tuk. What more, almost every hotel room offers a view of the fort.

RAAS exceeded my expectations - waking up to the city’s heartbeat and the call to prayer throughout the day was an experience in itself as was the unbeatable poolside fort view and moonlit dinners/drinks.

Despite Agra Fort being the most famous, Mehrangarh Fort, in my view, holds the title for being the most magnificent and with less crowds, you can freely wander without having to queue or wait your turn for a photo.

In fact you may have already had a glimpse of the fort in Batman’s The Dark Knight Rises. Set on a rugged cliff and dominating the city’s skyline, the imposing fort enchants as you walk towards its entrance. Weave through it’s passages and jewel embellished chambers whilst marvelling at the beautifully preserved murals depicting battle scenes of Marajara riding an elephant accompanied by his army. Then at its summit, enjoy the endless view of blue below.
